How to Lap Engine Valves 

  1. Prep the Surface: Thoroughly clean the valve stem, valve guide, and seat area to remove grease and debris.

  2. Apply the Paste: Dab a thin, light layer of Permatex Fine Paste around the valve face.

  3. Lap the Valve: Insert the valve into its guide. Using a suction lapping tool, rotate the valve back and forth against the seat using light, steady pressure. Lift the valve occasionally to redistribute the paste.

  4. Inspect the Seat: Wipe both the valve face and seat clean with a damp cloth. Look for an unbroken, uniform, dull-grey ring across both mating surfaces.

  5. Clean Thoroughly: Wash all components thoroughly with hot water or degreaser before final assembly. Ensure all abrasive residue is completely removed from valve guides and surrounding engine parts.
